Choosing between a gambling time-out and self-exclusion

A short pause and a longer exclusion cover different needs. Compare the duration, coverage and return conditions before relying on a label in an online casino account.

Support can come before the settings

You can choose to stop online casino gambling without completing another session or finding the perfect setting. For free support, the Gambling Commission currently lists the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 in England and Scotland, and the NHS Wales helpline on 0808 2819 265 in Wales, both available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. GamCare also provides online ways to talk to an adviser.

If there is an emergency, call 999. GamCare's urgent-help signposting also gives Samaritans on 116 123 if you need someone to talk to and cannot reach its service. Choosing a control does not replace urgent help.

A time-out is a shorter break offered through a gambling account. Self-exclusion is a more sustained arrangement intended to prevent gambling access. GAMSTOP Online extends account-based exclusion across participating Great Britain licensed online services. This comparison helps you check what a choice covers; it is not a test of how serious your situation is, and it cannot decide which option is sufficient for you.

What a time-out offers

The Commission's remote time-out code requires covered licensees to offer 24 hours, one week, one month, or another period reasonably requested up to six weeks. The code has a defined licence scope; this article concerns the consumer online casino setting rather than every remote gambling licence category.

The duration tells you how long the selected break lasts. It does not, by itself, tell you whether the operator applies it to every product, linked brand or account you use. Read the confirmation screen and ask support to state the scope if it is unclear. We have not tested the account controls of any named casino.

Record the start and end shown by the operator, the products covered and what the account says happens afterwards. Do not assume that closing an app or deleting its icon activates a time-out. Those actions change access to the app on that device; an account control needs its own confirmation.

If you want a longer period or broader coverage, you do not need to wait for a short break to finish before asking about self-exclusion. A shorter option appearing first in a menu does not establish that it is the right stopping point for your needs.

What operator self-exclusion changes

Self-exclusion asks the business to prevent your participation in gambling under the arrangement. The Commission's remote social responsibility code requires procedures and reasonable steps to refuse service or otherwise prevent participation. It also requires account closure and return of funds held in the account. An exclusion is not a direction to keep gambling until a balance has been used.

The code also addresses gambling marketing. Businesses must take reasonable steps to stop marketing as soon as practicable and remove or flag the person's details in relevant marketing databases within two days of receiving a completed self-exclusion notification. The provision distinguishes targeted marketing from blanket material where the individual would not knowingly be included.

Ask the operator to confirm the exclusion and which accounts and services it covers. Keep that response somewhere you can find without reopening gambling pages unnecessarily. If a promotional message arrives afterwards, preserve it and tell the business which exclusion record it relates to.

These are account and communication consequences. They do not establish the technical ability to block every gambling website on a device, and they do not promise that every possible route to gambling has been removed.

Read the duration and return conditions together

The Commission's remote ordinary code describes good practice for self-exclusion periods: a minimum period offered between six and twelve months, extensions of at least six months, and the option to select a period up to at least five years. It also describes continued exclusion after the selected period unless the customer takes positive action.

The source matters here. An ordinary code sets out good practice and allows justified alternative approaches; it does not have the same status as a social responsibility code that is a licence condition. We therefore describe what this document says without turning every detail into an identical promise from every operator.

For your own record, capture both the minimum chosen period and what must happen before access could return. A date labelled “end” may not mean automatic reopening. Confirming that distinction can remove the mistaken impression that you must decide to gamble again when the calendar reaches it.

We do not provide instructions for circumventing an exclusion or a shortcut back into an account. If you are concerned about what happens at the end of a period, an adviser or the scheme's support team can explain continuation options. You can seek that support without making a decision to resume gambling.

Where GAMSTOP Online fits

GAMSTOP says it blocks registration for, or use of, online gambling accounts with companies licensed in Great Britain. Its published choices run from six months to five years, with an automatic renewal option. Registration cannot be cancelled during the selected exclusion period, and the exclusion remains afterwards unless removal is requested through the scheme.

That makes it a different coverage choice from relying only on a single operator's setting. It still should not be described as a universal internet filter or a guarantee that every gambling route is inaccessible. Keep account exclusion distinct from software installed on a device and from a payment block supplied by a bank.

A simple coverage note might have three entries: the operator confirmation you hold, the GAMSTOP registration confirmation, and any separate device or payment controls you choose to arrange. This is an organising suggestion, not a requirement to finish all three before your decision to stop counts.

Our phone-blocking comparison explains the other access layers in detail. Here the relevant question is whether the control follows the account across covered services, or acts only at a particular device or payment route.

Use a coverage comparison without scoring yourself

Consider three illustrative needs. Someone wants a clearly defined one-week account break. Someone wants a longer exclusion from a particular operator. Someone wants exclusion across Great Britain licensed online gambling accounts. These are different descriptions of coverage and duration, not three grades of severity or three stages everybody must pass through.

For the first, check the time-out's precise end and product scope. For the second, check the operator's exclusion agreement and what remains in place after the chosen period. For the third, examine GAMSTOP's coverage and registration confirmation. If more than one description applies, the controls need not be treated as competing alternatives.

The figure compares those questions in three columns. It deliberately contains no score, recommendation engine or personal-information form. Nothing entered by a reader is collected because there are no inputs. The figure is an original summary of the documents, not a screenshot of a casino's settings.

If thinking through the comparison feels difficult, you can take the uncertainty to an adviser: “I want to stop using online casino accounts and I am not sure what this setting covers.” You do not need the technical vocabulary before making contact.

Ask about funds without delaying the exclusion

The remote self-exclusion code's requirement to return funds is a reason to ask how the business will handle the account balance, not a reason to postpone asking for exclusion. Keep the balance question separate from your request to stop gambling. The operator should explain the relevant account process through its official channel.

A practical message can be simple: “Please confirm my self-exclusion, the accounts it covers, and how you will return the funds held in my account.” Keep a copy of the response and any reference. This is suggested wording, not a tested customer interaction or a guarantee of a payment time.

This article does not estimate withdrawal speed, adjudicate bonus disputes or list identity documents an operator may need. Those are separate payment questions. If support combines an access issue and a funds issue in one reply, ask it to identify what happens to each.

An ordinary account closure should not be assumed to have the same safeguards as a recorded self-exclusion. Use the operator's explicit self-exclusion process or ask it to confirm that this is the arrangement being applied. The label matters because the action you want is prevention of gambling access, not merely ending a current session.

Keep support available after the setting is confirmed

A confirmation can be one practical step; it is not evidence that gambling can no longer cause difficulties. You may still want help with urges, relationships or money, or with the impact of someone else's gambling. The NHS describes support for people affected by gambling and for family and friends, alongside specialist treatment.

Its gambling-clinic information refers to England and includes self-referral or asking a GP about services locally. Check the service's own eligibility and referral route; this is not a promise of a particular appointment, waiting time or treatment result. The helpline contacts at the beginning of this article provide a separate way to start a conversation.

For a manageable record, keep the confirmation date, covered accounts, selected period and the support contact you prefer. You do not need to publish that record or send it to this site. We have not created a diagnostic assessment, copied a screening score or collected any personal details.

If a control does not behave as expected, ask the provider or an adviser for help understanding the gap. That is a reason to seek support, not a judgement about you. Choosing not to gamble remains a valid starting point and a valid continuing choice.

Questions answered

What does self-exclusion actually do?

It creates an arrangement for a business or scheme to prevent gambling access within its coverage. Operator self-exclusion also has account and marketing consequences; it is different from installing a device-wide website blocker.

How do I permanently block online gambling?

No single option described here is a verified permanent block on every possible route. GAMSTOP offers defined periods and renewal, while account, device and payment controls cover different layers; an adviser can help you consider them together.

What is the easiest way to stop gambling?

There is no single easiest route for everyone. You can start by contacting a support service and asking for help with the accounts or access you want to stop; you do not have to complete this comparison first.

Can I cancel my GAMSTOP exclusion early?

GAMSTOP says you cannot cancel during the selected exclusion period. Its exclusion also remains after that period unless you contact the scheme to request removal; the calendar end is not automatic reopening.
